Agra: A Delhi Police team was allegedly attacked by a mob in Agra’s Hari Parvat area, allowing two robbery suspects to escape from custody, police said on Friday. A case has been registered against three family members of one of the suspects and several unidentified persons for allegedly obstructing the police operation.
Delhi Police sub-inspector Sumit (only first name available) filed a complaint stating that the team, led by inspector Sanjay Kumar Gupta, had come to Agra to arrest Abhishek alias Judy and Aniket alias Kalu, both residents of Gihara Basti under Hari Parvat police station, in connection with a robbery case registered at Sabzi Mandi police station in north Delhi.
He said that they were apprehended around 11pm on Tuesday, but as the men were being taken to a local police station, family members of one of them allegedly intercepted the vehicle.
A crowd soon gathered at the spot and following alleged instigation by three women, members of the mob pelted stones at the police vehicle, smashed its windows, assaulted the policemen and tore their uniforms, before pulling the two suspects out of the vehicle and helping them escape, the complaint stated.
The Delhi Police team had not taken local police personnel along during the operation and was forced to leave the spot, police said, adding that the suspects had fled by the time Hari Parvat police team had arrived.
