New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has regularised 1,467 sanitation workers over the past two months and plans to regularise around 400 more before Diwali, Mayor Pravesh Wahi said on Monday.
Addressing a press conference at the civic body’s headquarters, Wahi said the MCD aims to regularise approximately 7,630 sanitation workers over the next three months. He said the Corporation had regularised 505 sanitation workers belonging to the 1998–2000 and 2000–2002 batches in October.
During the same month, 109 dependants of deceased sanitation workers were appointed on compassionate grounds, while 111 Assistant Sanitation Inspectors were promoted to Sanitation Inspectors. The civic body has also appointed dependants of deceased sanitation workers to 542 daily-wage sanitation worker posts on compassionate grounds, the Mayor said.
Describing sanitation workers as the backbone of Delhi’s cleanliness system, Wahi said their regularisation would provide greater employment stability and social security to them and their families. Wahi said the MCD was prioritising employee welfare and addressing workers’ entitlements.
Deputy Mayor Monika Pant, Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma, House Leader Jai Bhagwan Yadav and committee chairperson Sandeep Kapoor attended the press conference.
