The University of Delhi (DU) is exploring the conversion of vacant Type-I quarters across its hostels into temporary student accommodation to address the shortage of affordable housing, particularly for students coming to the Capital from outside Delhi.
The proposal is part of a broader effort to make better use of existing infrastructure while the construction of new hostels remains dependent on government approvals and funding. An eight-member committee has recommended exploring the conversion of vacant residential quarters into temporary student accommodation.
Rajni Abbi, Director, South Campus, DU, said, “Some vacant faculty quarters are being repaired and are being temporarily utilised to accommodate students in view of the acute shortage of hostel facilities. Since the construction of new hostels is a time-consuming process and depends on government approvals and funding, making use of existing infrastructure can provide immediate relief to students.
