Delhi Police’s tender for eight new Vajra riot control vehicles rests on a file that records the condemnation of four. The specification turns the tear gas truck into a mobile camera tower with an onboard “AI” computer and a drone launch deck.
If you have recently gone to protest in Delhi you may have spotted a “Vajra”, which is a Neptune-blue truck with steel mesh welded over its windows and a multi-barrel tear-gas launcher on the roof. It is the vehicle that is parked at a protest site before the police have decided if the assembly is lawful, and that drives into it once they have. Vajras and water cannons were posted at “sensitive points” across New Delhi district for the “Chalo Sansad” march on 20 July 2026, and The Tribune reported on 24 July that they stood at Jantar Mantar alongside an Ikshana facial recognition van and a mobile command and control vehicle that streamed live CCTV to officers on the ground. Anti-riot vehicles with tear-gas launchers lined the approaches to central Delhi again on 10 October, when more than 7,000 people were detained in the city ahead of the march demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.
