October 18, 2026 Tanusha Narula The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is prioritizing the December 2026 launch of the new Golden Line priority stretch and the ongoing mid-life modernization of 70 legacy trains on the Red and Blue Lines, even as severe bureaucratic gridlock pushes other major Phase 4 expansions closer to 2030. For millions of daily Delhi NCR commuters, separating the immediate 2026–2027 project openings from lingering structural delays is crucial for navigating the capital’s evolving transit map.
While the master blueprint promises sweeping network access, environmental disputes and funding partitions have heavily fractured the timeline. Only specific priority corridors are actively launching, following the monumental March 8, 2026 inauguration that successfully bridged the Pink Line into India’s first fully operational ring metro.
The DMRC is focusing its immediate capital and engineering resources on completing highly congested, under-served transit links.
As Phase 4 expands, the Red and Blue Lines remain the oldest, most heavily utilized arteries of the DMRC network. To maintain safety benchmarks and prevent infrastructure failures, the DMRC has launched a massive mid-life refurbishment initiative affecting 70 legacy trains.
