According to police, a former employee of the company, who had reportedly suffered losses of ₹15-20 lakh in the stock market, planned the extortion to recover his financial losses. He allegedly made threatening calls using a SIM card registered in the name of a beggar.
Katargam Police traced the accused through technical surveillance and call detail records (CDR) and arrested him from Surendranagar. Further investigation is underway.
An unidentified caller contacted 74-year-old Ranjitsinh Gagubha Jadeja, who was on duty at the security office of S.R.K. Diamond Company near Kiran Hospital on Katargam-Vastadevdi Road. Jadeja, a resident of Adajan's L.P. Savani Road, received the call from an unknown number.
The caller identified himself as Dinesh Bhargav and allegedly demanded ₹25 lakh, claiming the money was required for the safety of the company's young directors. He reportedly threatened that failure to pay would put the intended target at risk and warned of serious consequences.
The threatening calls caused concern among the company's management and employees. Police said the calls were made between the morning of August 19 and the afternoon of August 20.
